Tommy Douglas - Petro-Canada & the 1972 74 Minority Parliament - November 15, 1978

In this speech Tommy was responding to remarks made the previous day by Sinclair Stevens , the MP for York Simcoe, who objected to Petro Canada buying 48% of the shares of Pacific Petroleum. Tommy defended the setting up of PetroCanada as a result of the minority government. Indeed for half the speech he defended socialism versus right wing conservatism. The second half of the speech focused on the tar sands and Canadas independence in oil matters.

The same thing is happening still our oil is sent away and then we have to buy it back to put it into our vehicles etc. They get our oil cheap and we buy the products back at a huge mark-up and when opposition comes up against this policy they are attacked in the media as being isolationist or some other type of evil.

God bless Tommy Douglas. In America 65% of personal bankruptcies are because they can't pay for their medical bills. In Canada it's Zero 0% percent. And no Canadian goes homeless cause they can't pay for their kid's operation! It costs 1/3 less of the GDP to run Canada's non-profit system than the U.S. This man was voted Greatest Canadian of all Time.
