Wauconda Civil War Days 2010 - Hand to Hand Fighting Moments

Here are the 'hand-to-hand' fighting moments that took place both days at the Wauconda Civil War event. The units involved were the men of the 10th Illinois Infantry and the combined men of the 17th Mississippi and "The Orphan Boys Mess" of Austin's Battalion (all from the Chicago area). Both units had lost many men by this point and the hand to hand moments were pretty much the final scenes of each days fighting, all of which had been worked on earlier in the day to make it as safe as possible. Of course, we all loved it, as did the people watching the event. Hopefully there will be more to come at future events.

The Yankees should have captured both the flag and the flagbearer or at least treated the banner with some respect. In the previous day's fight the Yankee flagbearer ran away before getting too close to the enemy.

@hollywoodwerewolf we asked them to really fight us for the flag and to even rip it from the staff if needed to get it away from us because that would show the crowd how hard these men fought for these flags -- something which is rarely shown at events despite how often it happened. Our flag bearer would not go down without a fight, nor the rest of us so they needed to do what they did.
