I’m all for voting rights in the US to any US citizen. But I am also for history being presented properly with ALL the facts. As for the events regarding women’s suffrage only half the story ever seems to be presented. I call that “spin” or a “half truth”. No fact in history should be subdued while others have a light shown on them. It’s rewriting history and that IS WRONG. As for the rest of the video I say good job for only 30 seconds. Now let’s get the rest of the facts in the light.

The other major issue was riots. Not all these riots where started by suffrage protesters but some were. And those who rioted against suffrage protesters were also arrested. It wasn’t ONLY women’s suffrage members being arrested. A number of suffrage protesters even advocated taking arms (i.e. starting war). Not all suffrage protesters were as “peaceful” as we portray them today. Luckily the majority of “women’s suffrage” supporters understood it wasn’t needed and was against doing so.

I would also like to point out that this video is misleading in why “women’s suffrage” protesters where arrested. Most were arrested for things like “obstructing sidewalk traffic”. That might sound funny today but if we had flying cars, getting arrested for blocking the highway might sound funny too. Sidewalk use was far different back then.

Even before 1918 some states and territories had already changed the law to AGAIN allow women certain voting rights with Wyoming being the first in 1869. That is 1 year after men got the right to vote. A number of states went back and forth on women’s voting between 1869 to 1920 but women over all got their right fairly quick. Utah followed in 1870 and by 1914 nearly 2/3rds of the US had voting rights for women.

Women got the right to vote again in 1918. Just 50 years after men got the right. That’s “in the blink of an eye” as far as history goes. Today we also often think of “women’s suffrage” as meaning to suffer. As if there was some “suppressive” weight or trauma. But suffrage actually meant “right to vote” not to “suffer”. I find it ironic that that we hold that view today yet men in the US had to suffer or die in war to have their rights. Women just had to protest.

Having said that… not all men had that right either. Almost all states barred most men from also voting. With the exception of Rhode Island who gave it in 1841, men as a whole didn’t get voting rights until after the Civil war in 1868. Blacks got the right just 2 years later. Guess there wasn’t as much racism back then as most of us think but that’s another topic. Though I’m sure someone is going to try to argue with that statement.

In the US women had a right to vote dating back to 1777 in some states . Free Blacks during that time had this right in many states also… until around 1840 at least. That aside… the federal government never barred women or Blacks from voting. It left voting rights up to states to decide. By the late 1780’s most states changed the law to bar women with New Jersey being the last in 1806. In most states women lost that right due to mass voting fraud on the part of women.
