Are people seriously against Open Borders? It's purely positive - it opens up opportunity for embassies, research agreements, etc, friendship, etc, and should you plan to attack, you can surround their cities with troops before declaring war...

I can see how it might make it sense in certain cases in PvP, but still :P

People are against Open Borders because they believe that it gives the AI intel on your military.

They don't realize that the AI psychically knows your military might at all times.

Whenever I'm playing against Greece they always ally almost EVERY city state on the map. I remember I was playing as the Byzantines, I went to war with Greece, and I ended up fighting on all sides of my land because of all those damn city states. :D

I know this is late. But you have your facts wrong bro. while borders are open war isn't declared. If you declare war, i.e by attacking a city, open borders is turned off and your units are removed form that territory. I love open borders personally, but I thought you should know how it actually works. peace.

also one of the "tips" in Civ4 is something like "dont always open borders to everyone, they can be mapping your territory". does AI know the whole map, even if it is in fog?

*well in actuality, nothing bad ever did happen. i assume you are thinking about the battle of Thermopylae and the battle at marathon, but back then Greece didn't exist. it was just a bunch of city states like Athens and Sparta. your argument is invalid.
