  • @ENDONASOURNOTE Nah. I've got the wife and kids to worry about.

I was toying with the idea of a 1-series coupe, but the depreciation on any new car, especially a luxury one, is too steep for my liking. We make a comfortable living, but it's not much more than that. The wife has her Envoy, and I have the Mazda. Both had to fit car seats/kids, so four doors was a must.

But in about 13 or so years, I'll buy something really nice, after I publish a bunch of books. But a house is priority #1. lol

  • @ENDONASOURNOTE (con't)...and they would gain the skills and tecniques necessry to design long-lasting, vault-like German automobiles.

Well, the young enginneers didn't know how to design very well, as they lacked the experienced hand guiding them, so quality fell through the basement on most German cars, especially Mercedes.

After a couple of years of outrageous warranty claims all over the world, the OEMs started begging the now-retired engineers to return. Most were disgusted and did not.

  • @ENDONASOURNOTE True, but a funny thing happened in Germany circa 1999-2000-ish: many of the major OEMs (Mercedes included) decided to cut costs to the maximum to boost their bottom line. They did this by squeezing suppliers to death, so parts were more defective. Even worse, they fired the senior engineers because they earned a high salary, designing reliable and fast Autobahn burners. What used to happen, was these wise old men would teach the young engineers while they were new...

  • @ENDONASOURNOTE Very nice, brother.

If I had a substantial windfall tomorrow, I would have an SLK AMG w/6-speed gearbox. All of the power, none of the pain of most sportscars.

Alas, I'm stuck with a lowly Mazda 6. Still a great car to drive though. But it's no Mercedes.

  • @ENDONASOURNOTE No Porsche with the engine in front is a real Porsche, in my opinion.

The Cayenne is just a re-skinned VW Toureg. In other words, overpriced, overcomplicated junk.

A durable Porsche is an air-cooled Porsche, brother. That would be a 993-series or earlier. All 911s after that are fragile, mechanically. Very un-Porsche-like. I won't buy a new one for this reason.

If Dr. Ferdinand or Dr. Ferry Porsche saw what has become of their once-leading company, heads would roll.

  • You are the man, Jack.
