This is the drive into historic Hertford, North Carolina. The bridge is about to be scrapped - the oldest of it's type in the world - this records the trip into town...all two stoplights of it.

  • The last time I went across this bridge was about 1966, when my family went on a trip from Chesapeake, VA to visit my grandma in Grimesland, NC.

  • @fordude60 I bet it as a slightly different site back then. It's in danger again now...there are signs all over saying "Save our bridge, save our town"

  • Last year they took out a chunk of road to repair it. I ran down to the construction site one day - about ten feet down, it's water that runs underneath. I wonder, though, how they managed to make it last for decades, and these guys can't fix it with modern equipment?

  • its actually the only one of its type in the world

  • Yes. It used to be the longest one, but currently it's the only one - and not for many more years. They already have a plan to bypasss it because they can't keep the road built up leading in from 17...it sinks a lot very quickly.

  • You have a house there and haven't been since 1996? Is it rented?

  • good ole' Hertford. Im gonna forever miss this place

  • Wow I haven't seen this in a while and having been born in Hertford it does take me back years, O the memories. Great Posting! Though many of us don't live in Hertford in longer it is with joy to see something like this that bring back so much memories.

  • Hertford, my hometown... man I miss that place and North Carolina

  • the bridge isnt so much the problem as the causeway...that damn thing floods when the wind is high

  • I hated going over the bridge cuz it was so old. When it rains, the bridge gets flooded and you can see where your're going very scary.

  • My mom said that the bridge is so old that they can find the bottom to repair it. I guess whoever built it then knew what they were doing. Im from Hertford.

  • I know. I had to drive across it everyday. I only recently learned that water actually flows under the causeway, so it almost has to just float there
