Edward Manukyan interviewed on Kentron TV's "Sksenq Norits" morning show before his 2010 tour in Armenia. The guests also include soprano Lyndi Williams and pianist Tatevik Ayvazyan.

-- TRANSCRIPT --

HOST: I have heard that our most renowned composers always speak of you with great respect and admiration, and they even see the future of Armenian classical music in your works. But first I would like to talk about a few biographical details. If I am not mistaken, you have been a linguist by profession. I researched through the internet and I found out about it from a few interviews and articles that were written about you. How did your interest in composing music come about? Did you have any musical education or was it just your natural-born talent which eventually had to reveal itself?

MANUKYAN: It may seem that linguistics and music are very different, but each of those uniquely deals with human interactions. I had the interest in linguistics earlier in life; I taught myself English and perhaps because of that I decided to move to the United States about 10 years ago. But there came a time in my life when I realized that art had become most important among all my interests. Then I left linguistics for good; although we recently had a concert in Boston dedicated to Noam Chomsky, who is considered to be the father of modern linguistics. So I haven't cut all ties with linguistics, and maybe that was a way for me to make up for a lost career. But it is impossible to suppress the desire to be an artist, if it is there within you.

  • @hollymollyize Armenian

  • He's so modest and soft-spoken! Is he speaking Russian or Armenian here? The publication of his trio is in Russian.. I don't know what language he actually speaks.
