  • my tonki does not eat dry (hard) food.

    is that normal?

    he's only 3.

  • Dry food is not recommended for cats due to the fact it will cause them to tank up on water. They have very small kidneys to process all that water. Cats are designed to hydrate themselves through the meat they eat. That is why I use 1 cup of water for every pound of meat. The bone from raw poultry is a way for them to clean their teeth. Please check the articles at celestialpets com for additional information. I follow Dr. Yarnall's regime outlined in her books. Thank you for you comment.

  • Your right! Chicken necks cut up are great for them to clean their teeth. I wish the best for you and your new kitty!

  • @przrbl182 Dry food is not even natural for the cats. BARF is the best.

  • Raw chicken? Eeeeeeew.

  • @bl0gmOnKeY78 The expense in feeding your cat raw food comes from the supplements that go in the food, but the expensive ones (bone meal, lecithin granules, animal essential calcium, vitamins...) usually last about a year or less. The meat can vary on where you purchase it. I get mine from the butcher down the street, they do not have "organic, grass fed" meat, but the meat is processed there, it is affordable, they have a lot of variety, & it is fresh.

  • @sysprime Thats not really correct.

Kidney problems in cats is typically caused by pure dry food diets where the cats do NOT drink enough, not the other way around.

The benefit of wet diets, besides being lower in carbs, is that they force the cat to consume more water through regular feeding, since cats don't have strong thirst drives compared to most animals.

QUALITY dry food is fine though if you have plenty of water fountains around.

  • Question. I am gonna get a kitty soon and I would like to know if it's really expensive to feed them raw food. I know it's worth it because they live longer, but I'd like to know the how much it costs to feed them every week like this.

  • What you're thinking of is boiled/cooked bones, which is the way most people think to give their dogs bones. After you're done eating a rib, give it to the dog. This is a no no, as cooked bones can splinter. It's the same with a cat. However, raw bones are more easily digested and don't splinter. I give my dog a small raw hambone at christmas and he's a happy camper ^_^

  • thanks!

  • who ever told you that? dogs are pretty much just a modified wolf. Wolves don't spit bones out when eating prey like rabbits, and mice. Sure they can't quite crack the bones of a moose but they consume softer bones without a problem. The only reason they warn you so much about chicken bones is because the only bones ever fed to dogs were cooked, from the owners plate, the raw ones don't splinter nearly as easily.
