The fabric is a broadcloth. Broadcloth is similar to shirting and would be considered lightweight among all fabrics. This particular organic broadcloth is not a lightweight broadcloth, if that makes since. Since it is organic, it does not have the treatments and softeners that most quilting cotton (broadcloth) has, and so it will need some washing to soften it, but it isn't stiff.
