@freekzero Right. He's not necessarily saying it won't have value at all... just saying that it won't have MORE or LESS value that the 1000 other sites with the exact same description. So, one way to set yourself apart is to have a different description. Makes sense to me.
Of course, this COULD mean that if someone writes a shorter even more generic description, that it MIGHT rank BETTER than the slightly longer manufacturer description, except that it might have fewer keywords.

Matt, most users are not going to notice that the same description is in place on 1000 other sites. They will see the description on the subject site and that's it, so the manufacturer's description has value to the end user. Not everyone shops around as much as us web-geeks do.

Good question, but I think that there is no penalty for this, at least that I have noticed on google lt .There are a lot of auto generated catalog sites selling electronics here and as usual the first indexed gets higher rankings (ofc a few other rankings still matter).
