In this testimonial video, Animation Mentor alumnus Thomas Grummt discusses the workflow of his showcase shot. By using careful planning techniques, Grummt was able to decide on which areas to spend the most time. He focused most of his attention on the finger animation, which was important in portraying his character's emotions.

When planning his shot, Grummt found that the most important tool was video reference. He created video reference and wrote down rough timing. He also blocked in stepped keys every two, four and eight frames to set key poses and breakdowns. He explains that investing more time in blocking allowed him to save more time and energy on later steps.

Grummt thanks his mentors and friends in the Animation Mentor community who supported and helped him to become the animator that he is today. He currently works as an animator at DreamWorks Animation.
