Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, dreamed that Saint Michael commanded him to build a sanctuary on Mont Tombe - a small isle just off the coast of Brittany and Normandy.
In 708 Aubert constructed there a replica of the sanctuary at Monte Gargano.
The new sanctuary on Mont Tombe soon became a place of pilgrimage, religious hermits settled on the Mont, and Pilgrims came to seek a state of Grace.
In the Middle Ages the pilgriim routes which converged on the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel became known as the "Ways to Paradise" and "Way Montois". The pilgrims became known as "Miquelots", and little by little the Mont became known as "Mont Saint-Michel".
In imitation of pilgrims to Monte Gargano, the first pilgrims brought away pieces of stone taken from the rock of the Mont. When this practice was forbidden, the shell collected from the bay became the emblem of their visit to the Mont. Since the twelvth century the shell has been superceded by a metal badge, made in the village.
Access to the Mont - by crossing the vast expanse of sands at low tide - was difficult and dangerous. Pilgrims were warned "If you are going to the Mont, make your will!".
