Football Game Ends With Fight At Utah High School
Written by: Doug G. Ware
AMERICAN FORK - The clock never got a chance to run out during a playoff game between two Utah high school football teams on Friday. A massive brawl on the field forced referees to end it early.
American Fork High School hosted Friday night's game against Hunter High, during a Class 5A quarterfinal playoff game. With American Fork far ahead on the scoreboard, tempers flared late in the game -- and players got more physical than is typically seen on the football field.
With just under 2:00 left in the fourth quarter, a few football players started an on-field fight that might have even involved people in the crowd.
"This is a state playoff game. Emotions do run a little hotter for these type of games," said American Fork Police Chief Lance Call, whose department is investigating the incident. "We are in the process of trying to get game film from both schools."
American Fork police and likely the Utah High School Activities Association will conduct their own investigations into the fight. It was not immediately clear who started the brawl, who and how many people were involved. Some players could face disciplinary punishment.
After the fight initially started, players from both teams swarmed the field and began punching and kicking each other. Spectators in the crowd may have even been involved. Police Chief Call -- who attended the football game -- and several officers eventually broke up the fight.
"That is not acceptable. That is wrong," said American Fork head coach Davis Knight. "You are always talking to kids about keeping things under control."
Knight, who has coached American Fork High School's football team for 26 years, said this is just the second time he has ever seen a fight break out on the playing field.
Rather than allowing the players to finish the game, referees ended it with 1:59 remaining on the scoreboard. American Fork High School defeated Hunter 41-19.
"Unfortunately, the focus should be on those young men playing football that did a great job," Call said. "But a select few decided to ruin everyone's night."
Why is this news

Because it was a tournament game~ and so the news were there already... then, what made it even more "intense" were the allogations of coaches hitting players. Thus, news.
