In this video I show how to paint these flowers by starting with the lightest and brightest color first....the center! In watercolor, if you paint dark colors over the light areas, it will be impossible to re-capture the lightness and brightness of the color (such as yellow, bright pink, light green, and most pale colors). I paint some of the shaded petals and then go into the background with the darks around the white petals to make them stand out. Everything is done with a brush loaded with water AND color so that the pigment flows freely, thereby eliminating the chance for over working the flowers and making them appear dry and dead.

  • Love how you did this watercolor painting using negative and positive shapes, it is so alive. The quill brush is not only great for hand lettering but is a great brush for doing loose watercolor and they come in many sizes.
