Japanese Crown Prince and Princess visit Obuse, Japan

Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako visited Obuse town this afternoon. It was the first visit for the couple; however, locals said that the prince had visited with his parents around 40 years ago. Large crowds of spectators gathered at around 3:00pm to view the arrival of the couple's motorcade. The Crown Prince and Princess ended their tour of the town at around 5pm. Why did they choose Obuse to visit? What about this place ?

That's a good question. It could be because Obuse has a 500-year history of chestnut production and confection manufacturing, and its products were highly prized by the Japanese aristocracy. Katsushika Hokusai visited Obuse several times during his later years during a period when he is said to have created some of best works. The Obuse Hokusai Museum is home to one of the largest Hokusai collections in the world.
