April 13, 2010 — Kip Scheidler, Senior Director of Global Disaster Response, Habitat for Humanity, takes inventory of one of the thousands of emergency shelter kits to be given to Haitians displaced by the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake. The kits, which were purchased with $3.8 M from the American Red Cross and $250 K from CARE, contain tools and tarps to help families make immediate repairs or build temporary shelters, and are being assembled this week near Atlanta. They will be shipped and distributed in the Port-au-Prince area ahead of the peak of the rainy season in May. The emergency shelter kits are the first phase of a three-fold response to improve the housing conditions of earthquake affected families.
