Russian jets in Venezuela hit relations with US - 11 Sept 08

The already frosty relations between Moscow and the US are being put under further strain with the arrival of two Russian bombers in Venezuela.

Moscow insists they are just on a training mission but with Russian ships also due in the Carribean later this year, both deployments are being seen as a tit-for-tat response to US movements in Russia's backyard.

The Russian foreign minister is currently in Poland to express his concern over Washington's plans for a missile defence shield based in former Soviet States.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports.

I grew up in the 1980s and I've seen this all before. Names and locations change but in the end the people pay the price. America talks about freedom but so far it seems the only "freedom" the average American gets is the freedom to go without affordable health care while the bank takes your home. I'm sure they will turn this into the next war in the name of that same "freedom".

@randomusernamemygod you are 50% right. they did not ''copy'' each other. USA and USSR both ''copied'' their military weapons from NAZI germany. after that they both have gone their own ways. USA stealth tech, USSR/Russia plasma tech. USA M16/M4 rifle, Russia AK200 etc. but it all started with german tech.

@Insertings Inexperienced for what insurgency operations or conventional warfare against a similar force? NATO/US and China has no experience for the latter. Invasion of Iraq in 2003 was conventional warfare but not against 2 balanced armies and it is also in a desert environment. The current battlefield for NATO/EU is one of attrition in Skirmishing.
