It's important to note that "Coon Songs" were very much the Rap of their day, because they portrayed blacks in a negative way, much like some Rap "music" does. And also, these songs were very much a loss to us, certainly NOT in the lyrics, but in the musical richness of the melodies which for a time were the hottest hits in popular music.
