  • Going raw nearly caused me to become orthorexic. Becoming obsessed with not eating "toxic foods" were taking over my life and I became unreasonable about food. I cringe now when I read people talk about onions being "toxic", oils being "toxic", the wrong water being "toxic", cooked food being "toxic"... I mean people treat steamed veggies like it's anthrax in some of these raw food forums (especially the 80/10/10er's). Lighten up! Eating healthy isn't suppose to make you crazy!

  • nope but my family claimed I was orthorexic at one point because I went raw vegan overnight and was commited to it. I was getting healthy and felt great, no problems but due to their lack of understand they claimed it was a problem. Even now, I eat a healthy whole foods diet and I get told I have an ED because I refuse to eat junk / fast foods... some people are just ignorant though.

  • How do you help someone you believe is becoming orthorexic?

  • I think raw food nuts are shameful. It's plain unnatural. I think people in the U.S. are selfish and finicky eaters. Food is one of lifes few pleasures. Almost all raw foodies: (a) develop eating disorders (b) look like cript keeper (c) lose a the elasticity of their skin and lose bone mass. (d) by the end of the horrible ordeal they're forever tramatized and out of touch with there body - hormones out of wack, emotional problems, and even more sedentary and unhealthy. Life is fleeting.

  • I feel that I may be orthorexic. I'm afraid of certain unhealthy foods. There is nothing wrong with this, and I know I can't eat most places. I also feel there is going to be some ortho in every raw foodist, maybe just a little.

  • This video was great. Sadly I have undiagnosed ortho. It's worser than just messing with your social life and stress. It's a diet gone wrong.

  • My family claimed that I was orthorexic when they first heard about orthorexia, but I've never had any real or significant distress over health foods. Healthy food has been an incredibly positive balancing, stabilizing part of my life, bordering on a passion. You know what they say, it's either genius or it's crazy, and in my case at least it's genius.

  • There are a few orthorexics in this movement. It is obvious!

I totally agree.. Sometimes people who simply don't agree with your way of eating can accuse you of having an eating disorder or being Orhorexic. Usually it's out of ignorance or because you're taking steps to improve your life/health/diet and they can't or won't and feel a need to attack.

I don't impose or preach about my eating habits, but when I go out with friends I only request that we go somewhere that offers a wide array of choices for myself and others in the group.

  • yes, i've felt that way. i had to stop myself and say to myself "the point of going raw is to be healthy but stressing is making me unhealthy"

  • Yes when i used to be a raw vegan, I gradually became orthorexic, to the point of extreme anxiety where i almost left my relationship & gave up friends due to the' frustrations of being on such a strict diet. This isolation & obsessiveness with not eating anything 'toxic' almost ruined my life. I now eat a clean balanced omnivore diet am health conscious & my life has turned around. my deficiancies were corrected & i no longer panic about food in social situations. Food should not be a religion

  • Gosh I am definately not orthorexic. If it's 1700 and I haven't had a decent meal yet I will eat anything! Even meat, even cooked meat. If I don't eat I get so cranky I could just sit and cry.

That place you talked about sounds great. I LOVE quiet! What you described is like the high country in my state. If you go up there the main sound you will hear is wind. In the spring you'll hear wind and flowing water, summer you will hear wind and flies, winter you will hear wind and wind ;)
