The chimney sweeps of Rochester used to parade through the City on May Day. The tradition was carried on from the 1500s to 1900. It was revivied in the 1980s and is now held over the May Bank Holiday week end. It is now a fun event with folk music and Morris groups. It is great fun, bring your Guzzi!
I was there, i live in Greenhithe. The shone and it was a really good day..i went Monday. It was good to see a lack of people rattling collection boxes, and most of the food / drink was very reasonable too.

I was there on the Sunday...had far too much Scrumpy, which is why parts of the video are wobbly haha. I didn't see collection boxes but what I did have was a few "Christian" groups who evidently didn't appreciate the "pagan" rituals on offer...
