A very popular Irish song. Alan Lomax believed this song originated in the seventeenth century and possibly inspired Gay's Beggars' Opera.

It has been sung by The Dubliners, The Pogues, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Highwaymen, Roger Whittaker and The Limeliters among many others. There are also rock versions by Thin Lizzy and Metallica.

And who is the mystery guitarist here?

  • I happen to take delight in the drinking, the roving, the gambling and the smoking. Also the juice of the barley and courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early. What's that say about me?

  • @Botulizard It says somebody wrote this song just for you.

  • I have lost count of the number of songs I have listened to you sing, and your voice is excellent.

  • @OathkeeperRyu Thanks. I'm glad you are enjoying my channel.

  • Better then Metallica's cover. Not my much, rather listen to this on the iPod then 'em though.

  • @Fuamantu Thanks for your comment.

  • Mush to ring duma do duma da=Much too drink dumb I do dumb I die!:P Ya heard it from me first :)!

  • what kind of paint did you use for that wall?

  • I noticed when singers get to the chorus, the clapping reminds me of chopping. It reminds me of other songs from the same time period in USA. I remember a song with a lyric "Roll the cotton down". Singing helped get the work done. Does anyone know if this was associated with harvesting barley?
