Frederick Delius (1862 - 1934) was an English composer who lived for a time in Florida near Jacksonville where he managed an orange grove. His time spent there was later recalled in his work, Florida Suite. Florida Suite is comprised of four movements: Daybreak, By the River, Sunset, and At Night.
I have posted "By The River" accompanied by photographs representing the people and places that made up the Old Florida that existed before the invention of Air Conditioning contributed to the population explosion that so changed the state.

  • I DIDN'T KNOW GOATS WERE SUCH A COMMON FORM OF TRANSPORTATION TILL I STARTED WATCHING THIS VIDEO - WHICH I HAVE SEEN DOZENS OF TIMES - THESE GREAT OLD PIX WITH THE EXQUISITE MUSIC OF DELIUS ARE A GREAT COMBINATION - THE LADY BY THE ALLIGATOR SIGN LOOKS LIKE MY MOTHER IN HER YOUNGER DAYS, AND I LOOOOOOVE THAT GIANT TREE - I'VE NEVER SEEN A TREE SO GLORIOUS IN REAL LIFE - PROBABLY CAUSE THEY ARE ALL CUT DOWN BY NOW. I LOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS VIDEO - THANKS FOR MAKING IT - I MIGHT COPY THE IDEA......

  • Oops! I forgot to say thanks for the picture of the mermaids (I assume that is Weekiwatchee Springs on old U.S. 19. We used to go swimming there when we traveled from North-central Florida to St. Petersburg to visit my Aunt back in the 40s. Yes, it was before AC! We would cool off with a swim, then picnic, and would arrive at her house in late afternoon. Thanks again.

  • Thank you jaxdriver for uploading this music. The pictures are wonderful! Somewhere in my albums I have old, old postcards of the Suwanee River Jungle Drive near Old Town. I am a fifth generation native of Florida and have seen many scenes such as you portray here (not quite old enough for the steamboats). Actually I already own this album but enjoyed it here as well.

  • if you love Delius, you can subscribe to the Delius Trust UK. and get some great books and recordings.

  • I go to JU, they moved the Delius house to my campus!!

  • Very nice! Really enjoyed the old pics of Jax and St. Augustine and group shots....I kept expecting to see a relative!

  • Thank you for posting this lovely Florida tribute and the many fascinating photos.

  • Sublime.... how can I have come this far without knowing Delius' Florida Suite ? It's the missing link between every great pop tune from Verdi to the Beach Boys and beyond....

  • The first notes are very much like Bedrich Smetana's flowing river "Vltava" (usually identified by the German name of the river "Moldau"). But the lyrical part keeps me hearing the song "He Plays the Violin" from the musical 1776 . And all three are very pleasant to hear.

  • @mossfitz True - when I hear this piece, I conjure up visions of Twickenham--not Tallahasee!
