My Vaio suddenly developed a graphics card fault where lines would appear on the screen and booting into windows would fail (works okay in VGA mode, but not normal). I found out this was caused by faulty connections under the nVidia graphic chip as constant heating/cooling causes the soldered connections to break.

I removed the board and heated then nVidia chip using a hot air gun for a minute or so and then left it to cool. This appears to have fixed the issue...hopefully for a while.

  • It did go again about 2 weeks ago, but I was able to strip it, heat gun and then reassemble in under an hour. It's now back in service, same as before.

  • UK Sony fixed mine in 3 days. OUT OF WARRANTY SERVICE (4 years after you bought the laptop). Just go to your vaio`s web site, you`ll see.Came back like new with comlementary vaio screen cloth and a "sorry" letter from european head of sony. Please note guys in the past I had the laptop cleaned cause of same gpu issue, funny how it worked for a year or so, but main problem is motherboard. So all this cleaning the fan talks is not the real issue. Call out of warranty service, don`t miss free fix

  • Is it still fixed?
