This is dedicated to my Australian Shepherd, Scooter, who spent almost 14 years by my side. He loved the Colorado mountains, camping, Jeeping, playing in the snow and chasing sticks into streams. He is missed. Every day.

  • Scooter had a good life. I found my Aussie in the desert 3 yrs ago. The coyotes had broken his front leg. Hank was barely alive. I spent some money on ole HANK. He is my super loyal jeep'n, boating adventure dog. Hank is smart and tough ,guessing he is abou 4 yrs old.. He still is not afraid of coyotes. He does stay near me. Aussies are great.

  • Wow, what an amazing story about Hank! Aussies make such great companions, especially when you're active outdoors! My new dog, Rio, is almost 2 now and has taken to the outdoor life like a natural; he loves to Jeep, swim, hike, explore, etc.

  • Scooter was absolutely beautiful. I'm a brand new aussie owner. Our new baby is Comet. He's 13 weeks old today. He blows my mind at how fast he learns!! He is truly a joy. he's already 16.5 lbs as of today's vet vist! Our only problem is dealing wtih his car sickness issues... hopefully we'll get to the bottom of those soon!!!

  • Hi and thanks for writing! Congrats on Comet! How much does he weight now and is his car sickness better? I've been lucky with all three of my aussies..they love(d) being in the car!

  • What a great tribute to a great dog! Yes, they do enjoy the outdoors and are always up for an adventure.

I've had Aussies for 25 years, and we've all had some great adventures in our times.

I have a 9 month old named Jack now, and I hope he'll be the dog that takes me into my retirement years and travel the country with me.

  • Thanks so much for commenting. I love Aussies. My Rio just turned one. He's got a lot to learn, but he will go camping and offroading for the first time this summer, so he'll learn the ropes fast...they are so darned smart! Do you have videos up of Jack?

  • as of today he weighs 22 lbs he just keeps growing and growing lol. His obedience training is going really well. We've been taking short car trips a couple of blocks to the park at the lake and he's done really well. He's even starting to get excited and jump in the car on his own! Small steps but hopefully as we venture further and further he will continue to be comfortable with it. He absolutely LOVES the lake!

  • I do have some fun videos on vimeo(dot) com. I think if you do a search for "Australian Shepherd puppy" on that site, you'll get to them. The longest video is almost a two parter. The first is Jack in his pool, the second half is Jack trying to get Joey to play with him.

Joey, his big brother, will be 12 in August.

We are desert rats and do a lot of camping and hiking in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

There is a short video of Jack's first desert trip. He likes ants!

  • Most definitely. He's a herding dog, he's bred to be off leash.

  • mozes: leashes don't belong on mountain dogs. My dogs would think they were being punished if you were to put them on a leash. lol
