  • Having a mind doesn't mean you don't have soul. These guys (Kurt, Mike, Brad, etc.) push the boundary every time they perform. Have you seen these guys live? I can assure you, they "go for it" every time. They push each other, push themselves, push the audience. These guys live on "the cliff." It's just that unlike so many others, who fall off that cliff, these guys are so damn deep and committed to the pursuit of something higher that they're skilled enough to remain standing strong.

  • i think kurt and mark turner and mehldau are the fathers of the vibe and sound in a large part that i hear out of players like mike and aaron parks... when kurt brad mark and all them came around they were bringing some unbelievably unique stuff, and for guitar and from what i can hear in writing these days jazz in general kurt is a new milestone. so its not to take away from mike to say that you are remined of kurt by his playing, kurt is just one of those musicians who changes it all in a way

  • i agree but, i'd love to hear a NEW guitarist find a NEW distinct voice like Metheny did, or Scofield did, or, more recently, Lionel Loueke and Kurt Rosenwinkel. I feel like the other instruments are different in that they have a wider variety of talented and DISTINCT players, ya dig? From Mehldau to Glasper or Redman to Turner. It would be nice to hear that from guitarist but... this guy is still young and growing. We'll see what happens.

  • I know I'm listening to Kurt when I hear him, and I know I'm listening to Mike when I hear him. I can say the same for Lage Lund, Jonathan Kreisberg, and a few other young cats. It's a great time to be a jazz guitar fan.

  • Sure, Mike sounds more like Kurt or Pat than he sounds like Pat Martino or Joe Pass. It's interesting to recognize the development from those earlier guys through the 70's with Scofield, McLauglin, and the 80s with Metheny and Frisel, to the 90s and beyond with Kurt and others. You realize how the later artists are indebted to those who came before, just like in science, art or literature.

  • I'd say Ben Monder is pushing the envelope more than anyone at this point.

  • My personal belief is that jazz is not about being brand new all the time, ground breaking, and proving yourselves as the next big / new thing. You may reinvent yourself, but there must be times of consolidation and then times of experimentation.

Searching for a sound, making music with feel, colour, beauty, emotion, tension, resolve, nuance & intricacies that are unique.

His music may resemble others but it is his own.

And he is a great player with a great collection of musicians around him.

  • @MusicwithBALLS yeah these guys don't have what miles,wes,parker,coltrane had...soul

  • Fantastic drummer!

  • Hallo! Does anyone know the added chords in the end of chorus? The same with what starts this tune in album, too? Thanks. Sorry for bad English.

  • Mike is beast!

  • @Krelianx yeah, and no one have a clue whats happening. Things can start breaking, imploding or something if he takes it much further. best, Sandemose

  • to me it seems like all the new guitar cats coming out are evolving the vibe that kurt meldau and turner plus the others of that era were doing. And I really dig what they are doing with it now. to my ears it sounds differnt than the vibe from 10 to20 years ago, but definately came from it.

  • Wow what a talent. The thing I like about Mike is that he sounds like Mike. He doesn't sound like Metheny or anyone else to these ears. I just love the lines...

  • @ musicwithballs - i couldn't agree more...

  • Been there once. Teeny little art gallery. Great place to see a show. Go if you can. Dunno what's up with the dark... perhaps the camera didn't catch all the light. Anyhoo...

  • Why argue...enjoy or watch a different video.
