This is an 18" Cube Exo-Terra that I have modified and turned into a paludarium. I initially tried to keep it as a South American Biotope but wound up mixing South American with Madagascan inhabitants.
The tank currently houses a Madagascan Giant Day Gecko, 2 Red Eye Tree Frogs, and some Nerite Snails. I used to keep a few tetras in the water but the gecko learned how to go fishing, so I no longer do that, lol.
Plants are Fireball and Tiger bromeliads and in the water I have java moss, anubias frazieri, and some micro swords. The Spanish moss is the artifical stuff from TRex.
Construction:
I built a foam background using "Great Stuff" expanding foam, black silicone and dry coconut fiber. Driftwood was embedded in the foam while it was still wet and the foam cured around it holding it in place.
The waterfall was plumbed using 1/2" PVC which is also hidden behind the foam. Initially a small submersible filter powered this water feature, but cleaning the filter was quite a chore with the day gecko in the tank, as she would always run out. I wound up drilling the tank and installing bulk heads, and I hooked up an external Eheim filter. MUCH easier to maintain now. I can clean the filter and drain/fill the tank without having to disturb the animals.
Lighting is provided by 2 compact fluorescents (a Zoo-Med Repti-Sun and a standard household compact fluorescent) as well as an 18" Hagen Plant bulb.
The water area is kept at 78ºF using a submersible filter, and the ambient air temperature is usually a bit over 80ºF due to the heat form the lighting.
This paludarium also has a zoo med repti fogger which comes on twice a day, as well as the Repti-Mist system which sprays the cage down 4 times a day. With these things setup the way they are, this is a pretty low maintenance setup.
another video that deserves more views.
