Islam has, in brief, 2 meanings, as explained by the scholars of the religion. The first is peace ''as-salaam'' and the second meaning is the submission to God (to His will, His commands etc)
And both meanings are complementary one to the other, because you cannot have peace except when you submit yourself, your life etc to the will of your Creator and Provider and Sustainer, and the facts throughout history of other ways of life prooves this, and also you submit yourself to God only because you have inner peace, free from arrogance and pride to think yourself above others and even worse, above The One and Unique Master of the universe.
All human beings are born muslims, that is, if they don't have any influence by parents / relatives / friends / society etc, their natural instinct will direct them towards knowing and worshipping The Only One Unique God, without associating any partners of any kind to Him.
Furthermore, all of the creation in this universe, from the microbiological life and atoms to the galaxies and what's between them, are subject to God's laws / commands etc.

One of the verses in which the meaning of the word islam is used, is the following:

۞'Do they seek other than the religion of Allâh (God), while to Him submitted (''aslama'' - same root as ''Islam'') all creatures in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly. And to Him shall they all be returned.''۞
