  • I use 13 rounds on my archtop as well, and it's and Eastman, and I love that sound. That "dark sound" can get too dead and muddy to my ears, I think hand carved tops with rounds just sing better. Plus, Pisano is playing his own model. That guitar sounds exactly how he wants it to sound, it's his own musical vision. Joe Cohn uses rounds on his Gibson, and sounds great. I just get annoyed with this concept that jazz guitar must be played with rounds, like its some dictum or something...

  • @MrGuitarvent

John is playing a primarily acoustic guitar. The Eastman projects nicely with round wound. One takes the good with the bad I guess. I use round wound myself on my archtop.

  • John Pisano's chord work is excellent, but I'm surprised that he uses round wound strings. I could do without the squeaks.

  • cool!

  • John is a story teller. He tells us stories of beauty, fantasy, thrills, and shadows behind them with his six strings. Every time I listen to his story, I have tears in my eyes. True musician. True guitarist. It is never enough to see him play and listen. I want to watch more video of him like this. Thank you for posting!

  • I checked out the Eastman site and unfortunately found that their jazz guitars are not available in 25.5" scale. THAT would make their instruments sound as good as the L-5 above. Short scale guitars like Byrdlands, ES-175's, or those 25" scale Eastman just sound sort of tinny to me.

  • john is playing on a guitar strung with round strings, hence the string noise.

rich is playing on flatwound strings, hence the smoother sound.

  • I know what you mean vis a vis "modern archtops" but I think Rich is playing a recent Switchmaster too. That said John Pisano sounds great! Nice backing by Rich too. More John Pisano please !! Did you guys do any more tunes?

  • True, but I think they meant the state of modern archtop guitars are buzzy and trebly. Not all but more than less are like that. I do not beleive a guitar has to be vintage to sound and play great, but I can see why laguna made the comment. I am sure he was not commenting on Johns playing as no one could, but on the guitars tone. Listen to Richs tone it is fat and warm. Peace

  • Preference of tone is purely a matter of opinion.
