Before 1992 we used to enter Abu dhabi directly without passing Saudi Arabia customs.

No not really. We are residents of Qatar and we found some agent in Doha who did all the legwork for us. I think it cost us 50 Riyals each and took a couple of days. For this we got a transit visa only (for both directions).
