Alzo al volo di mia fama
La speranza ch'ho nel cor.
Se contenta fai mia brama,
Sarà pago il mio rigor.
Alzo al volo, etc.
Handel revived and considerably re-wrote the opera in December 1720, creating ten new arias, a duet and a quartet, and unusually this second version is felt by many to be superior to the first. The main inspiration for the reworking was the arrival in London of the star castrato Francesco Bernardi, known as Senesino. Durastanti stepped down from the 'male' lead into the role of his wife, Zenobia.
Senesino (Francesco Bernardi) (October 31 1686 -November 27 1758) was a celebrated Italian contralto particularly remembered today for his long collaboration with the composer George Frideric Handel.
Senesino (picture left) was the son of a barber from Siena (a city in Tuscany, Italy) - hence his stage name. He joined the cathedral choir there in 1695 and was castrated at the comparatively late age of thirteen. His debut was at Venice in 1707.
