I think people are totally missing the point of this song. It's not about hating the British (which is NOT what Irish republicanism is about) or about how great or bad the IRA is- it's about the inhumanity and turmoil of war. It's about a man, driven to kill his fellow man by the circumstances of fate (and a colonial and exploitative system), and how he wishes for peace- peace with freedom, but peace nonetheless.

It's about the opposition to the domination of the people of Ireland (whatever their background) by foreign powers (and, in most strains, by domestic economic powers as well), and the establishment of a free, democratic (and, in most strains, socialist) Ireland.
