Messier didn't fight much but when he did, holy crap could he throw 'em. One of the toughest players ever and one of the best natural leaders in sports.

Ya Messier hit him and knocked him down, and then hit him again when the guy was down on almost one knee, but if you see, he only swung once. He realized after he had thrown that second punch, that Zalapski wanted no part of him. Its a dog eat dog world on the ice, and you have to defend yourself, while also following the code, which he did. What if Zalapski after that first punch got up and took a swing at Messier? You have to be prepared. It's either you or him out there.
