Maybe by the book you would play the harmonic; but, I add the dynamics of pressure applied across the strings to hold a more accurate intonation as the guitar is played. See, with no pressure on the string the intonation is good only as long as no one is holding the string; but, when pressure is applied to a string the pitch will always more higher. Playing a string whose intonation was set off the harmonic will just create a sound that is sharp across the intonation and therefore not true.

You have to play harmonics on the 12th fret not pressing the string on the 12th lol! You just have to very lightly touch the string on the upper metal fret of the 12th

@scarsonmybed setting a strings intonation off the harmonic is a base line method and is explanatory material used in books. However, in reality this does not hold true sound long. Any pressure applied to the string will cause the pitch to move higher. Intonation is lost as soon as a player moves the string. I want the intonation to hold while the player is using the guitar in actuality. So, I simulate the pressure that is applied during playing on an average across all players/ styles I know.

@scarsonmybed When I intonate a guitar I like to see as well as hear a sampling of the players style and choice of songs as this all makes a difference in performance. Players go heavy on the strings for style and expression. This will throw intonation off the harmonic out. I can adjust the intonation to compensate for this. When I am selling a guitar and do not know who may play it I use a moderate pressure that I have determined will satisfy most styles.
But, you just keep doing what you do.
