Chasseurs de Phoques Atlantique pêcheurs et DFO Dept Pêche et Océans Info:
Seals are not only killed using a regulated instrument approved by the Marine Mammal Regulations. They are also slaughtered with illegal weapons by Canadian Sealers in Newfoundland Labrador PEI and Nova Scotia on the Front and in the Gulf with hakapiks, clubs, illegal poles, illegal gaff hooks, rifles, banned .22 caliber weapons, struck and wounded, struck and lost, and maimed, stomped on, and left breathing through bubbles of their own blood before being hooked in the face and dragged over cold ice or sliced open. Poorly regulated, aided by the CCG, and rarely charged by Canadian DFO officials, who sometimes have given the impression that Sealers violations would be overlooked and/or allowed without retribution.
