  • These fights with Peralta were the rough drafts upon which Ali's victory over Foreman was (partly) based. Moving, counterpunching, defence. Tiring him out. At the end of the fight Foreman is exhausted, which plagued him in round 8 in Zaire and again in round 12 against Young. Big punchers like Foreman, Lyle and Shavers often had a stamina problem. None of them were as complete a fighter as Joe Louis, with all the different facets that go along with being a great fighter, including stamina.

  • Agreed. I would like to find the rematch between Foreman and Peralta in which Foreman stopped Peralta in the 10th round which was probably the greatest show of late round KO power for young Foreman.

Peralta was a really good boxer. Early on in his career he defeated LHW champ Willie Pastrano in a non-title bout and drew with Ron Lyle and Oscar Bonavena.

  • @tintinesk2:

Ali didn't move against Foreman. The ring that they used in Zaire was actually gotten from a YMCA, seriously. Referee Zack Clayton said in an NBC interview that it had a padded flooring so a moving boxer like Ali wouldn't be able to move easily. Clayton said in the same interview that he felt that Ali had to fight the way that he did out of necessity.

  • Gregorio Peralta, gran boxeador , gran deportista y grande como persona.

  • @ROKERITORAMON un orgullo Peralta

  • Great fight, Peralta is tough but Foreman took this one, 6-2-2 I scored it.

  • True, although Foreman apparently never took Ali seriously. He arrived in Zaire in September about 15 pounds overweight. The delay allowed him to drop the poundage, but he probably did it too quickly.

  • Of course, being unable to train properly for a month prior due to a cut eye probably didn't help his stamina in Zaire...

  • If he "nearly" punched himself out vs Peralta, he definitely did 4 years later in Zaire.

  • Peralta had an impressive 99-9-9 career record with lots of well known fighters on his ledger. Foreman was the only one to ever KO him.

  • The version I heard was that there was a misunderstanding in the corner and George mistakenly believed they'd told him the 9th was the final round, so he went out throwing bombs and nearly punched himself out.

  • Joe louis is completely differnet to these fighters.
