  • A young Wesley Smith there, who strangely had a deeper voice than he has today.

  • Yes, a young Wesley practising his authoritive news reader voice!

  • This takes me back. I used to direct this show. Richard Boyce who directed that night was my colleague. In-fact I remember directing the Central West programme on the Monday the South show went live.

The most enjoyable job I have ever had - made even better by such an excellent team. I also directed the news for the East too when they were short staffed.

Those were the days when there were no instant starts for vtr clips - imagine running loads of clips and effects at the opening - live!

  • Les Halliday Great Interview from January 6th 1989

  • Great behind the scenes clip. Love all the technology, the Betacart and especially those robotic cameras - 20 years ahead of BBC London News where I work! Thanks.

  • I love the way they always say "the world's most up to date studio" whenever anything new is built. Of course it is, by default! Those robotic cameras caused problems at Central East when mid-show they'd go barreling off sideways across the studio floor and take out anyone or anything that got in their way :-)

Nice video. Thanks for sharing it.

  • Look at those computers from 1989!! lol.

  • excellent regional news music, this is how it should be!

  • bob southgate was involved in the birth of TVS

  • They no longer use the studio at Abingdon but the newsroom is still very much open - for now.

  • hasn't the studios in Abingdon closed down now, or is it still in use.
