A well thought out and articulate critique of a complex issue. Two points I might highlight though - legalising same sex marriage will not make it any more acceptable outside Australia. I doubt Iran will ever respect a gay marriage over a civil union! Also your last point - The judgement that love between consenting adults is acceptable in the case of homosexuality and not in cases of incest is a double standard. It lacks logic to approve of one and deny the other. Surely this is discrimination?

@lukejreid Well, then I would also argue that children born through incest are much more likely to develop deforminities, there is no similar risk with same sex couples

Marriage was an institution that was developed to conserve, protect and ensure that property holdings were passed to the next generation in the same family. Love more often than not a last consideration in entering a marriage. It was strictly business. This was true long before the Bible or the Church came along to "sanctify"

I believe that governments should get out of the lives of their people when it comes to issues of .love and the bedroom, in cluding who wants to marry whom.

Well, same sex marriage is a sin. We all sin. Just remember that. But sometimes, we are tempted to act out like to steal, or lie. Having a same sex marriage or sexual intercourse is a sin, just like lying. You can choose not to do it.

Same sex marriage is against what the bible says. It's a horrid thing to do. Though, it's not our place to judge. One day when you have to face God he will do the judging, not us.

@satinISsexy There are so many things in the bible that are beliefs of people not the word of god - slavery, not working on sunday, not cutting beards, not wearing two fibres in cloaths, not planting two crops in the same field, woman not knowing man before marriage & not eating shell fish etc - can you explain what makes gays so unique? why are people condemed simply based on the anatomy of who they love ? why do you lap up some things in the bible with relish and ignor others?

@satinISsexy You do know that Laviticus was not god -Laviticas was'nt even a person - the book of Laviticus is a translation from Hebrew of the beliefs of the small Lavit tribe thought to number about 300 living in the middle east over 3 thousand years ago - The Taliban are a tribe numbering about 21/2 million should we adopt their beliefs too - this young guy deserves better than your obsolete dogma

Well, wow. The arguments people make against gay marriage in Australia are just pathetic. But you know what's really sad?; the ones used here in America are even worse... Anyway, nicely done. I liked your thoughts on the issue.

@robmuch The above poster had a point. Moreover, I'll just add that blood-related "consenting couples" can choose to adopt to prevent the deformities you speak of, just like same sex couples. Another double standard.
