Magical Cat Adventure is your incredibly orthodox, average "Run and Gun" style platformer developed and published by the low-profile group, Wintechno Co. Ltd, in 1993. Wintechno (which stands for "Win Technology") who was once known for their basic dabbling in video games and PC peripherals is now best known for their quality LCD monitor stands in Japan. MCA, which was released in Europe and Japan, is comprised of five stages with some explorative themes and features bosses for each level as well as some tricky platforming segments.

The European version of the game is different from the Japanese version as it features less graphics and gameplay features (such as the invincible speed run or the ability to shoot above you) and has altered level designs, not to mention it also lacks a story and makes this already generic game even less memorable. For the sake of this video, we play the Japanese version. The little story in the beginning refers to the once-peaceful "Magical Land" which has been corrupted by the evil of "Great Satan" and only the courageous efforts of a magical cat from "Eharms Forest" can stop him and return Magical Land to its original glory. I guess regular Satan was too vanilla for a game of MCA's majesty, so they had to level him up and promote him to Great Satan. Yup. Well, you at least know why the story was removed from the European / International version.

In the game, you do all the stuff you would in a basic platformer: Run, Jump, and grab treasure. You can also increase your maximum health, upgrade your throwable weapons (by breaking flying chests, which feature random weapons), and become semi-invincible against enemies if you run long enough (though the game is not meant to be played with speed, you can take advantage of running in some spots). The game features audio/visuals reminiscent to a SNES or Genesis game of roughly the same time of release, but with a few more animation frames for characters and objects, so I wouldn't say it looks or sounds particularly good for an Arcade game, but is appealing on a certain level. The gameplay is annoying because your character has an unnatural starting/stopping movement and attacks pretty slowly except in air, which makes playing the game harder than it should be. What's also annoying is that nearly everything hurts you, even the (seemingly harmless) chests that hold your power-ups. Speaking of power-ups, if you can't get the power-up you want or "accidentally" grab a useless weapon before an upcoming boss fight, prepare to be harassed. Thankfully, you usually have more than enough health and invincibility frames when hit, so the game is one of the easier Arcade releases to finish (which can be seen as a good or bad thing).

While the game is short, fairly easy, doesn't feel like an Arcade game, and is completely unremarkable (not to mention it has a bit of an identity crisis... it can't decide whether to be like Mario, Sonic, or Ghouls 'n Ghosts), it may appeal to young gamers and platformers are a bit uncommon in the Arcade scene after the 80s, but it is a little boring to me personally. It's certainly not a bad first effort though. This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.

  • GetoGama "reviewed" this on his channel, and we all wondering what the heck this was as we knew it wasn't a console game.

Having a platform game like this as an arcade just seems like a bad idea. Not so much the length (although, the first level here is absurdly long), but the game design on platforms just have you going all over the place where typical arcade games are consistent throughout.

  • @matman125 Yeah, I watched that; it was funny. He was talking about how fruity but okay it is, LMAO.

  • Vyse, you're a cool cat for uploading gameplay of this magical adventure. (I had to, I'm sorry)

  • @Zeifear Lol, it's all good man.

  • I played this all the way the through one day.

Makes absolutely no sense but a pretty cool arcade platformer nonetheless

  • looks like bubsy

  • Honestly this game looks more like a SNES/Genesis Game rather than an arcade game,I don't see why they released this at the arcade rather than just on a console

  • It's like Sonic and Bubsy had a baby

  • I didn't know the Japanese version had a story :)......And I've understood why the levels are so long (and difficult !!) thanks to your review :) !!
