Video about Taishanese American and Canadians and their contribution to North American society.

The first wave of chinese immigrants to Canada and the US came during the 1850s, whom most were from the Taishanese speaking areas of Taishan, Kaiping, Xinhui, Enping, Heshan and Jiangmen in Guangdong Province. Many came to set up businesses or were in search for Gold during the Gold Rush in California (US) and then later in the Yukon (Canada). When the Gold Rush was over, many of them worked on building the railroad, both in the US and Canada. After that some returned back to China, while others stayed in North America to set up their businesses, primarily in their local Chinatowns. Between the period of 1850s until the early 1900s, there was a Head Tax that was placed on Chinese immigrants by the Federal Government of both countries, that forced them to pay a heavy tax before they can officially settle in Canada. The motive was to prevent the flow of Chinese immigration into their country.

During WWII, many Taishanese Americans and Canadians served in the army to fight agaist the Japanese Army and the Nazi German Army. After that period, many talents came about such as Anna May Wong; who was the first chinese american actress, Feng Ru; who is known as the Father of Chinese Aviation, James Wong Howe; considered one fo the greatest American cinematographers, and many others.

Chinese immigration from the Taishan area to North America continued until the early 1980s. From the 1980s until 2000, most immigrants to North America were from Hong Kong and Taiwan. From 2000 till now, it is mostly immigrants from all over Mainland China, including Taishan.

  • i like how you tried to make this video, but the last half of the video didnt show actual taisanese. i wish you have put in more historic photos, and leave out the actors, and current or recent policians. but still a good effort. was going to show my grandparents, as my great grandfather served in WW2 and born in the US as well. We didnt have many pics, only solo shots of him in his uniform.

  • thx =) Hmm the politicans and actors/actresses are the sucesses of Taishanese American and Canadians... putting actual Taishanese(non-famous ones) would be my next video coming up probably ;) Subscribe to keep up to date with what is coming next.. ^^

  • Really neat, I love your videos. Taishanese are usually overlooked now, especially with so many people from the more northern areas of China immigrating to North America. The vast majority of Chinese immigrants were from Taishan up until a couple decades ago!

  • At the moment, there are still immigrants coming from Taishan.. but nowadays it's Chinese from all over Mainland China.. in Canada most Chinese immigrants still come from Southern China, but not from Guangdong only anymore.. but mostly from Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hunan and Jiangxi. Most of my Chinese friends who are immigrants or student visas mostly come from the South like predominantly from Shanghai, Zhejiang and Hunan.

  • nicely done!
