Life of an American Fireman is a 1903 film by Edwin S. Porter. Depicting the rescue of a woman from a burning building, it is one of the earliest American narrative films.

The film is notable for its unusual editing style. Near the end of the film, we see an interior shot of the woman and her children being rescued from their room by a fireman who carries them out of the window. Then we see the same action repeated, but this time from outside the building, with a view of the firemen climbing the ladder and rescuing the family again. Filmmakers would later develop the technique of switching between different angles, instead of showing the same event twice from different angles or filming the same action with cross-cutting.
