@TheStockwell Look 4 Sarah's take on Paul Williams' Rainy Days & Mondays. I can only listen to the Carpenters' version about once a month & if I listen anymore, I'd become a diabetic. Joe was smooth. As for retro lounge, these kids should be exposed to the likes of Sarah, Ella, Della, Williams, the Chairman, Hoagy C, & Billy Eckstein. Singers w/o gimmicks, fireworks, and auto tune. I won't even mention Adderly and the small & big bands. Singers who sound great live as well as on memorex.

@H1delta Well, now I have to head over to Amazon and get some Sarah Vaughan! I'll look for a good 5-star box set. Another great jazz singer was the late Joe Williams. Smooth, baby smooth. He never lost his voice or had to compensate for it as he got older. Well, I think we need to move along. Anyone stumbling onto this YouTube page for Lea Salonga will wonder how it turned into a retro lounge!

@TheStockwell I may be a bit strange but I didn't much care for Ella. I don't know why. I can't even think of a song she sang. I also didn't think much of Della Reese. I've always preferred Sarah Vaughan. Sarah was great in the beginning & improved with age. It probably explains why I have several albums by Sarah & none from Ella or Della. Nobody sang Misty like Sarah. Not even Mathis. On the other hand, I prefer Nina Simone's Porgy over Sarah's. And I could listen to both all day & I do.

@H1delta Sinatra thought Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald were the tops. He was amazed at Cole's smoothness and the fact that he played the piano effortlessly, something Sinatra couldn't do. Ella he just plain adored. On one of his television specials they sang a few duets and then he just gets out of her way. It's great seeing him sitting on the steps, smilling like a kid and thinking, "Dude, I totally know Ella Fitzgerald!"
Best to you from San Francisco.

@TheStockwell As much as I like It Was A Very Good Year, my favorite Sinatra song is All The Way. I was much younger then (1957?) but I knew good music when I hear it. I've read somewhere that he considered Vic Damone & Tony Bennett his superior. I disagree with him here. The only one that equals his singing & phrasing is Nat King Cole who could paint a picture with his words. But if you want to put your loved one in a romantic mood, Frank is the man. Hope you had a good holiday.

@H1delta There's room for everyone to sing this song. I' like you - I don't think you need to prove you enjoy a performance by slamming different one. Even Sinatra fans get into fights over his best albums. One group says the ONLY stuff worth hearing in the early Capitol years recordings.Others say that nuts, that his talent peaks with Reprise. Why not have it ALL? I can have Sinatra's "Everything Happens to Me" CD next to Salonga's "Inspired." Best wishes to you, H1delta.

@TheStockwell I'd avoid those people who "wonder if Sinatra could really sing". I'm a big fan of Francis Albert but not his version of this. It's good but we're talking about Lea. And when Lea sings a song, she sings a song. But IMO, Frank's "September of My Years" album is his best. All of the songs are great, especially "It Was A Very Good Year". And his "Hello Young Lovers" from the same play this song was sung is a classic. Peace be with you.

I don't know. The character seems too young for his singing voice to be so deep, while the girl's voice seems just right. Good song, though.
