Papermaking was introduced to Scotland from France hundreds of years ago hence many terms used have a french connection, couche to move the pulp to a wire gauze to dry now a couche roll on a fourdriner papermaing machine, salle a term used for the area to sort finshed paper etc There is evidence of papermaking in Denny Stirlingshire Scotland next to the River Carron going back more than 200 years on the same site. There were approx 70 papermills in Scotland but now
there are less than a handful. Carrongrove Paper mill Denny Stirlingshire Scotland closed November 2005 and is being demolished
