(Sounds of Construction)
With the final piece of steel being put into place, construction on the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital has reached the half way point.
Vice Adm. John M. Mateczun "It was just two years ago in the First week in Nov. that we stood just about here and had a ground breaking ceremony, this hospital is part of the largest investment that the Department of Defense has ever made in hospital construction."
Set to open in the spring of 2011, the Hospital marks a leap forward in how military healthcare will take care of military personnel and their families and will be a huge asset to healthcare in the national capital region.
Vice Adm. John M. Mateczun "This is going to be a fantastic hospital, it is going to be the leading exponent of evidence based care in the country."
Col. Chuck Callahan "Ladies and Gentlemen the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital will blaze new frontiers in many different ways. Chief among them will be our roll will be the DOD first joint military medical facility."
To mark the occasion of the final piece of steel being put into place, steel workers, contractors, and military personnel and government employees alike signed the 1400 pound piece of metal before it was hoisted into the air and fastened into its final resting space atop the hospitals main building.
Vice Adm. John M. Mateczun, "Its what your getting the hospital ready for that is the most important thing. A department is committed to provide world class healthcare for all of wounded from Afghanistan, Iraq and all of our nations wars, providing that world class healthcare to all of their families, and your building a facility that is going to help us all do that."
A facility with state-of-the-art equipment, a highly trained staff and designed to help speed the recovery of its patients.
Vice Adm. John M. Mateczun, "We are building something that is a legacy for the future and we are on the cusp of history today and thank you for all you have done."
The new hospital will be more than a million square feet in size and have four clinic buildings in addition to the main inpatient care building. For the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Patrick Bloodgood, Fort Belvoir, Va.
