Food Safety: Georgia Plant Knowingly Shipped Contaminated Peanuts; Study Links Corn Syrup to Toxic Mercury

We look at two stories on food safety. The FDA has
issued one of the largest food recalls in history after eight people died of salmonella poisoning. A Georgia peanut plant knowingly shipped products contaminated with salmonella on a dozen occasions over the past two years. And a pair of new studies has revealed traces of toxic mercury can be found in many popular food items containing high-fructose corn syrup. The sweetener has become a widely used substitute for sugar in processed foods, including many items marketed toward children. [includes rush transcript]

Sunday, Superbowl, I ate a jar of "party peanuts", just a local store brand, & I have been sick at both ends since Monday night. Congress & Pentagon seem to steal plenty of money, & FDA gets there share too. Corruption at all levels. xox

When someone is putting forward a position that has been soundly disproven, say, the world is flat, like it bears any attention at all, of course scorn will flow. The agency is corrupted by someone who wants no agency to exist in the first place. Someone who believes in a world set similar to you.

When you elect people who hate government, don't be surprised when the government fails miserably under their leadership. Hopefully we have grown wiser. At least the rest of us, you haven't.

With all these recalls, I think it's time we return to locally grown, organic food. I think it's also imperative that the FDA have its regulatory powers restored. Hopefully President Obama will do this.

The FDA is a very well funded institution and it does nothing. This is an example of how big government oversight does not work. The FDA has failed you, and you want to spend more tax dollars on it.
