Looks great with the 16'. How do you think a Necky Chatam 17 or the wider and bigger Looksha17 would handle in similar surf conditions?

@cocobolo1 I haven't paddle those kayaks so am not sure. I suspect the Chatham 17 would be OK. The generous rocker on the Chatham 16 makes it easier to hold the line I think. It was more difficult in my older Current Designs Slipstream and I was usually broached sooner. The Chatham 16 is an awesome boat for difficult conditions.

@ABCKayaker Thanks: I'm trying to figure what boat or design characteristics will keep a touring sea kayak playful and maneuverable in the surf zone while sacrificing a minimum of speed and tracking ability for distance. I guess you would suggest focusing on rocker more than length. How is the Chatam if you just want to go from A to B?

@cocobolo1 The Chatham 16 is a little slower point A-B I think. My Chatham 16 tracks well. I've been in some nasty cross winds and only needed 1/2 the skeg to prevent weathercocking. The low deck helps I think. I've never even seen a Chatham 17. I've heard it's the most popular of the Chatham series and is faster than the Chatham 16. Definitely worth consideration if you can find one. I've like to try one myself!

it's a Necky Chatham 16 Sea Kayak, fiberglass version. You can also see a yellow one in my "Sea Kayak Surfing V" video. Very good sea kayak for stormy conditions. See also: neckykayaks web site
