Three holes of golf in PGA Tour Golf for the Sega Genesis. Actual console play. Not emulated.
The PGA Tour Golf series sits at the apex of 16-bit golf. The series brought a number of innovative features to the genre, including reverse angle views of the ball in flight, close-up views of the action around the hole, a simple three-click horizontal swing meter, interactive overhead views of the course, and a full PGA license with real tour players and courses.
The graphics in the first outing of PGA Tour Golf are solid, but, admittedly, primitive, bordering on cartoonish. Like most golf games of the era, the sound effects are minimal, but serviceable (the chirping birds are a nice touch). The musical selections heard during the hole flybys are also good. The three-click swing interface, with automatic club selection, couldn't be easier to work with. As long as you don't overdrive a swing, the wind is manageable. However, save for wind speed, there are no other weather effects in the game. Putting is straightforward. The topography of the green is presented on a separate screen, in an easy to understand fashion. The distance above or below the hole is given and doesn't need to be inferred from the topography. The menu driven nature of the global interface seems a little out of place in a console game, but it functions perfectly--although an option to turn off the hole flybys would have been appreciated. The four-round tournament mode played against real tour players is excellent, and having four courses to play adds significant replay value. The game is battery saved. PGA Tour Golf may lack some of the refinements that one would expect in a genre-defining game, but it's the overall presentation of the PGA series that sets it apart from it's contemporaries. Fun is maximized; frustration is minimized.

Geez...I remember playing this game for hours. Still remember the double eagle at Scottsdale. Wish you could somehow put the beginning "song" on here...I remember how the song rocked pretty good for an electronic song.

The simplicity, elegance and fun of the game play that EA accomplished in the first two maybe three PGA games on the Genesis has in some ways never been equalled to this day on the modern platforms IMHO.
