International Student Films Festival "Amirani" was founded in 1978 by the Cinematography Union and "Theatrical Institute" and this initiative was supported by such famous people in Georgia as Goderdzi Chokheli, Tato Kotetishvili, Nana Jorjadze, Dito Tsintsadze, Guram Petriashvili, Andro Chiaureli, Dato Janelidze, Shakro Jorjadze, etc. Since it establishment, the festival acquired a great importance, because just from the beginning it had been regarded as the most independent and unrestricted festival by the cinematography community of the Soviet Union. In the 1990s, after collapse of Soviet Union the festival's activity was ceased and after the long time of inactivity, in 2007 Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film University initiated festival's revival. Since then, the International Student Film Festival became as annual event. Nowadays representatives of more than 20 countries take part in the festival. Tbilisi International Student Film Festival's main goal is to introduce Georgian and foreign students' films to the broad audience. For the young film directors, who have just started their professional carrier, the festival is great opportunity to present and establish themselves. A lot of students participated in the festival used the chance to achieve professional success. This is confirmed by the fact, that since it's revival a lot of currently prominent film directors, e.g. Aleko Ckhadadze, Zaza Urushadze, Sergei Bodrov Iuri Naili and others, participated in the festival. Over the years, the festival hosted a number of famous film directors. The members of the festival jury were: Eladar Shengelaia, Lana Gogoberidze, Otar Ioseliani, Gogi Tumanishvili, Merab Kokochashvili, Rezo Chkheidze, Mikheil Kobakhidze, Ineke Smith, Rezo Esadze, Leonid Gaidai, Maschenko, Izraeliani, Nikita Mikhalov, Sergei Soloviov, etc. It has been mentioned, that 5th Tbilisi International Student Film festival, which is planned for May 17-21, 2011, will be organized only by the students of Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film State University. This year festival will host representatives of almost all leading worldwide film schools from Germany, Poland, Holland, Israel and Switzerland.
