The Twilight Zone (1985-1989) S1 Ep 5a

Paul Marano (Tony Lo Bianco) is a widower, taking care of his little daughter Cathy (Andrea Barber) after his wife died in a car crash a year ago. One morning, on his birthday, he is taking Cathy to school when a careless biker forces him to suddenly swerve and crash into a parked car.

Paul escapes unscathed, but Cathy is not so fortunate - she lands in coma. Being told by the doctors that hope is slim, he leaves the hospital crushed. Suddenly, Paul sees a little girl (Jenny Lewis) on a roof of a nearby building. He runs towards it, but is confronted by a nun (Nan Martin) who informs him that the building is a former orphanage being torn down, and that there is no little girl on the rooftop. The nun tries to sell Paul some remains from the orphanage, which Paul declines, but when the image of that same little girl reappears, pointing her finger to an antique children's bed, he reverses his decision and buys it..

(opening narration) What if Paul Marano had turned right instead of left? Hit the breaks a millisecond quicker? Or if... if... if... The word ticks like a crazy clock trying to reclaim a single, tragic second from the Twilight Zone..

@sydneyt55 I think I remember part 3. Kathy or was it Sarah started developing a thirst for human blood. Toby came to life and became Sarah or was it Kathy's familiar. They both returned to the orphanage where they sucked the blood of that old nun who stole Toby from her. In the closing scene, Rod Sterling said, "Don't mess with Sarah or was it Toby in the Twilight Zone!"

OK, I made that up. There is no part 3. :)

@Supenmanu No, I think that's a bit of a stretch. The better explanation, that Sarah's soul moved into Kathy's body when Kathy died, is the most rational.

@Rowan07001484 That's the conclusion I came to as well! The episode should have ended with a musical twang (or something less cheesy) to indicate that a switch had occurred. It makes the story take a very dark turn very quickly.

i saw something like this on a religious show about miracles. it was exactly the same story.
