Jim parson is creping me out......

This is really negative reinforcement. NR is not the same as punishment. A negative reinforcer is an aversive or noxious stimulus, the removal of which is rewarding.

Okay does it matter whether it's negative or positive or whatever. Just enjoy the show and stop being picky.

@DoggyDogma YES! I teach this in my psych & early childhood ed courses. I start by saying, "You now have the responsibility to correct the other 99% of the population that is being taught wrong" (primarily through the media spoken by characters who should know better)!

@DontGiveMeSteve Hopefully the teacher pointed out the error in "negative reinforcement" being used as a synonym for "punishment." I teach psych and early childhood education and it is incredibly frustrating!!!

@20WvS11 I know that you are wrong. You can't add an electric shock to increase a behaviour - it would be to decrease the behaviour - the shock is removed once the desired behaviour is acheived this is the point of reinforcement. You seemed to have forgotten it is not about reinforcement but punishment as well - the Spraying of water is positive punishment (adding something to decrease a behaviour), the stopping of spray is negitive reinforcement.
-
@UndecidedFan you can't give something desirable to decrease a behaviour - he reinforces her being quiet (or her decision to be quiet). Spraying water is positive punishment (adding a consequence to decrease a behaviour). Negitive Reinforcement would be stopping the water once the desired behavour has been acheived.
My psychology teacher showed the class this and I died. This is amazing.
