The Hindu-Arabic number system allows us to perform addition, subtraction and multiplication smoothly. We also connect these to primary school education.

  • Why don't you use V for 5 instead of "IIIII" in the Roman Numeral notation?

  • Hi,

The use of powers of 5 in the Roman

weakens the natural connection with our

decimal system. Better to stick with powers

    ot ten.

  • Norman...The method that your daughter did was known as inverse door junction method during Brahmagupta's time.

  • During Brahmagupta's time the decimal system was well established. But Brahmagupta did multiplication using four different methods. Door junction method, killing numbers method, Gosutrika method, Katiyapadi method etc. Gosutrika method has become our method today.

  • I think schools are now openly trying to prevent children from using their minds. After hearing what your daughter's school is teaching her I am really convinced of the "dumbing down" program some people think was put in place.
